Landfill and Leachate Treatment Station

LANDFILL

The landfill is a large space for the disposal and treatment of unsorted urban waste from the VALNOR intervention area, which has technical solutions suitable for preventing and safeguarding the environment and the surrounding population. After its closure and with the unit properly sealed, the landfill can be converted into spaces such as: pedestrian walkways, playgrounds or other recreational facilities.

VALNOR has three sanitary landfills located in Abrantes (closed), Avis and Castelo Branco, which receive around 10,000 tonnes of waste annually. Furthermore, at the Abrantes Landfill, the gases released by the deposited organic matter enable energy recovery through the transformation of biogas into energy.

LEACHATE TREATMENT PLANT

All leachate from the landfill and other operational areas is sent for treatment at the Leachate Treatment Plant, where it is treated using a reverse osmosis unit.

The Reverse Osmosis system is based on a physical cross-flow filtration process, in which the leachate is pushed with a pressure greater than the osmotic pressure in a module with a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane allows water molecules to pass through, resulting in the separation of the leachate into a clean effluent (permeate) and an effluent containing pollutants (concentrate).
