Organic Valorisation Unit

It is an industrial unit where Urban Waste (UW) is treated, with a view to separating it into different streams in order to maximise the recovery of recyclable and recoverable materials.

Waste is received through a double door system that ensures odours are confined inside. Solid waste is deposited in pits and then sent for mechanical treatment where, through multiple unit operations, it is divided into several streams: organic matter, recyclables (cardboard, plastic, ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals) and waste.

These operations are fully automatic and include: screening of solid waste, opening of bags, separation of ferrous metals, aluminium and ballistics, as well as infrared optical separators and preparation of organic suspension.

In this way, waste is sent to the landfill, recyclables to the recycling industry, and organic matter is transformed into organic fertiliser after undergoing a series of sequential operations, such as anaerobic digestion and composting.
